Å·ÃÀÐÔ°®Æ¬â€™s world-leading research in physical oceanography is largely focused on shelf seas and oceanic mixing processes. Research in sediment dynamics assesses and predicts flow and seabed dynamics. ÌýThis is now linked to our rapidly growing expertise in remote sensing and geospatial analysis of terrestrial ecosystems. ÌýThere is a major focus on modelling at the interface: catchment hydrology, estuarine and coastal zone dynamics. Our expertise is extended through to the marine renewables industry through the . New techniques for measuring, and novel measurements of, turbulence in continental shelf seas and estuaries, developed by Å·ÃÀÐÔ°®Æ¬â€™s Turbulence and Mixing Group, have revolutionised the representation of key vertical exchange processes within state-of-the-art numerical ocean models.

Dr Yueng-Djern Lenn
Iceberg in the Drake Passage

Yueng is a polar physical oceanographer and her interests lie in understanding the physical processes integral to ocean overturning that impact climate in the polar oceans. Her Southern Ocean research has focused on Drake Passage eddy heat and momentum fluxes, the surface Ekman layer that constitute the upper limb of the overturning circulation, and diapycnal mixing driving water mass transformation in the thermocline at the Antarctic continental slope. Yueng’s Arctic research focuses on water mass transformations occurring in the continental shelf seas and along the Arctic continental slope that link the Arctic to the global overturning circulation, most recently investigating the role of different mixing mechanisms (i.e. double diffusion and turbulent mixing drive by tides or winds) in fluxing heat and other properties from the warm Atlantic Water into overlying Arctic halocline and mixed layer.
